Baltic Birch Plywood: What the Term Means and How to Source an Alternative

“Baltic birch” is one of the most searched terms in the U.S. panel market. Cabinet shops, fixture makers and laser and CNC shops use it as shorthand for a specific kind of panel. But it's a trade name, not a standard — so it pays to know what you're actually specifying.
What buyers mean by “Baltic birch”
Traditionally, Baltic birch is all-birch plywood made in Northern and Eastern Europe: thin, rotary-cut birch plies throughout the core (no softwood or poplar filler), few or no core voids, exterior-type glue, and often a 5′ × 5′ sheet. The appeal is a stable, void-free core, clean exposed edges and strong screw holding.
There's no U.S. grading standard for the term itself. When you buy “Baltic birch,” what you're really buying is a set of properties: species, ply construction, glue type, face grade and sheet size. Write those into your spec, and you can compare any supplier on equal terms.
What to put on your spec
- Species and construction: all-birch plies, cross-laminated, with ply thickness stated (thin plies mean more layers and a more stable panel).
- Glue: phenol-formaldehyde (exterior-type) for moisture-exposed work; confirm the formaldehyde certification you need.
- Face grades: B/BB for show faces, BB/BB for painted or two-sided work, utility grades for carcasses and jigs.
- Sheet size: 4′ × 8′ (1220 × 2440 mm), 1250 × 2500 mm or 5′ × 5′ — and long-grain or cross-grain.
- Compliance: TSCA Title VI certification for hardwood plywood sold in the U.S., and the data your broker needs for the Lacey Act declaration (genus, species and country of harvest).
Why origin documentation matters now
Birch plywood origin gets close scrutiny from U.S. customs and from buyers' compliance teams. Ask any supplier for the species declaration, the country of harvest of the veneer, the country of manufacture and batch traceability. A supplier who can't document those is a risk, whatever the panel is called.
Where Palati birch plywood fits
Palati birch plywood is pressed at Palati's plant in Rustavi, Republic of Georgia, from rotary-cut birch veneer (approx. 1.4–1.5 mm plies) imported from European and Baltic suppliers, bonded with phenol-formaldehyde glue. We don't call it Baltic birch — it's made in Georgia — but many buyers use it where they'd spec Baltic birch.
- Sheets: 4′ × 8′ and 1250 × 2500 mm, long-grain or cross-grain. The 5′ × 5′ format is not produced.
- Grades: B/BB through C/C — see the grade guide.
- Compliance: TSCA Title VI & CARB compliant under a ULEF exemption, FSC® on request, Lacey Act declaration data and a Georgian certificate of origin — see the document package.
- Supply: mill-direct containers, mixed grades and thicknesses welcome.
